Five Ways to Add a Nancy Meyers Touch to Your Home
By Hannah Claussen
Spring is finally upon us. With warm breezes and blooming flowers comes the feminine urge to redecorate. I don’t know about you, but it hits me every year as soon as the temperatures rise above 60 degrees and I see the first petals of the new season. The desire has been even more intense since I’ve spent months planning and designing an update to the 1960s home my husband and I are preparing to move into (picture: layers and layers of wallpaper and dusty carpet throughout — yikes). Enter: the Nancy Meyers aesthetic.
Famous for her late ’90s and early 2000s rom-coms like Something’s Gotta Give and The Holiday, her name has been popping up everywhere I look on the interior design corners of social media. The homes in her films have a signature look about them: warm, cozy, and timeless. Who doesn’t want that?
Unfortunately, most of us don’t have the budget for an interior designer to overhaul our home decor. But fear not! Here are five Nancy Meyers-approved home decor ideas to spruce things up for spring.
Charming Kitchen Accents
When I think of Nancy Meyers, I think a cozy and charming kitchen. Here are a few accents to add some sweetness to your cooking space.
This gorgeous tea kettle looks way more expensive than it is. Mine should be arriving on my doorstep any day now. Your kitchen needs a lamp, trust me. And this precious cordless one is perfect to add an ambient glow to your kitchen counter. Nothing says elegance and attention to detail quite like striped cloth napkins. You can’t go wrong with a linen set like this.
Sweet Storage Solutions
We all have clutter and practical items we need but would rather keep out of sight. Lucky for us, there are a plethora of storage solutions that add style to your home while keeping your necessities within reach. Who doesn’t love scallops? This scalloped wicker basket set is perfect for everything from free-floating pantry items to your kid’s toys that always end up on the living room floor. These glass containers are perfect to keep baking essentials within easy reach while also being very attractive. I have three, and I love keeping my oats and loose leaf teas in them! These fabric storage bins look lovely and can hide anything you don’t want the world to see when they walk into your living room.
Layer Textures and Patterns
Don’t be afraid to mix patterns and textures! While daunting at first, it can add so much character and depth to your space. Pillows are the perfect way to experiment because they’re inexpensive and easy to swap out. A floral one like this is perfect for spring! I’ve been eyeing this rug for our bedroom! So warm and inviting.
Warm Lighting
The key to the warm and cozy look is lamps, lamps, and more lamps! I almost never turn on an overhead light, it‘s just too harsh. Instead, opt for lamps throughout to give your room an inviting glow. Bonus points for incandescent light bulbs! LEDs are so out. We bought two of these for our bedroom over a year ago, and I love them! They look so expensive and can blend in with so many different decor styles. This wicker lamp is all over my Instagram feed! This darling little lamp is perfect for your kitchen, desk, or bedroom vanity! I have mini lamps all over my house, and I’ve been eyeing this one for a while.
Embrace the Lived-In Feel
My favorite thing about Nancy Meyers’ movie homes is that they’re lived-in. They’re never perfectly spotless and put-together, they’re layered and collected. It’s the kind of space that makes you want to curl up on the couch or sip wine at the kitchen island. The space is a little messy because real life is messy. A perfectly manicured house doesn’t feel homey the way a slightly disheveled one does. Your home is your space, where your family gathers to relax and connect with each other. A space full of love and evidence of a life well-lived. Embrace what makes your home yours, and the loved ones that live there with you.
